12-19-12 Daily Update

Parents,

Happy holidays, everyone!  I hope this break provides you with an opportunity to relax and enjoy time with loved ones.  I'll see you in 2013!

Thank you for all of the donations for the party today... treats, drinks, treat bag items, and wrapped gifts. Everything was great!  The party was a lot of fun.  We played snowball hockey and a Left/right gift game.  We had so many donated gifts that we were able to play twice!  I'll attach a picture to this e-mail.

Remember to encourage your child to continue reading over the break.  All students are on target to meet their reading goal for the quarter right now, however, that's no reason to slough off.  You can help your child transition back into school after break by having them read daily.  I told students that I expect everyone to have an AR test to take when we return.

The same is true for math facts. This break provides a great opportunity to catch up on this practice if your child needs it.   If your child has not yet mastered addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts yet, then have them work with Flash cards or the Math Facts in a Flash program.

Your child received a newsletter about next month's Powerhouse theme - exercise.  They can fill out the included slips to earn Powerhouse prizes after break.

Our Winter Party will be after lunch tomorrow (2:00).  Please send in any items for the party by that time.  Thank you once again for the generous donations of wrapped gifts for the party game we will play.  Just so there are no misunderstandings, there are no parent volunteers needed at the party tomorrow.

In light of today's tragedy at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, we wanted to provide you with reliable resources that can help you discuss a difficult topic like this with children. Please pass these resources along to parents at your school and in your community who may need help talking to their kids about today's event. 

"Talking to Your Kids About Natural Disasters, War, and Violence" is a Scholastic article that offers advice from a child-development expert about how to talk with kids about violent, disturbing news. 

"Talking to Children About Community Violence" is a tip sheet from the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry about how to handle discussions with kids about violence in local communities.

12-13-12 Daily Update

Parents,

We finished our treat shop sales today by selling out of every treat.  In total, we earned over $110 dollars just for our class!  That should mean that we raised over $500 as a grade level.  Amazing!  Next Monday we will present the money to representative from the Zion Church which uses the money to purchase food for needy Whitehouse families.  Thank you for your support of this project with your donations!

I could use help with an activity we have planned for the holiday party.  I need a few wrapped gifts to give away as part of a party game.  Gifts should be inexpensive items.  School supply items work well such as packs of pencils, crayons, markers, erasers, paperback books, notebooks, etc...  They need to be wrapped for the game as well.  If you would like to donate a small gift item for the game, it is appreciated.  The more gifts we have, the more fun it is and the more students who will receive a gift.

A great day of Treat Shop Sales today!  We sold over $80 worth of treats and have more to sell to Kindergarten and ourselves tomorrow!  Don't forget to send you child with money if you would like them to be able to buy treats.  They are all 25¢.
