9-6-12 Daily Update

Parents,

A few students have envelopes with paperwork for Title I Reading tutoring to sign and return.  We would like to get these students started as soon as next week.  Returning these forms as soon as possible is appreciated.

Many students are doing a great job with meeting reading goals so far.  While I explained much of this in an earlier letter sent home regarding AR, here are a few other notes to clarify how AR will be used.
  • Students are expected to read for 20 minutes as part of their nightly homework.  Each week, students are expected to meet a percentage of their AR point goal.  This week's goal is 23% because 23% of the quarter has passed.  This helps students keep on pace to meet their end of the quarter point goal.  (See the insert of their take home folder for what your child's point goal is.)
  • Sometimes, students are reading longer books that may not be able to be finished by the end of the week.  In this case, I ask the students to see me to set a page goals for finishing the book.  In this case, students need to reach these goals by Friday in order to earn recess and battle ball.
  • School reading, like Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing does count, but shouldn't be relied upon to reach their goal.
  • At the end of the quarter, we have lots of rewards for reaching Reading goals.  Those that reach 100%, for example, earn a pizza party lunch.  Students who surpass 100% can earn other prizes such as pencils, candy, free books, homework passes, and other things.
You support of reading at home is crucial to your child's success this year.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact me and I will try to answer them.
